A few days before the German Parliament ratifies Romania's Treaty of Accession with the EU, Berlin hosted two events promoting Sibiu, the European Capital of Culture in 2007. The international campaign promoting the programme has started this week, in partnership with National Geographic Channel, Travel Channel and Euronews.
The opening of "Sibiu, Young since 1191", an exhibition of photographs showing the multicultural faces of Sibiu, took place yesterday in Berlin. Bogdan Mazuru, Romania's ambassador to Berlin, together with Gunther Grichbaum, representative of the Christian-Democrat group in the German Parliament, in charge of relations with Romania, and Suzanne Kastner, vice president of the German Parliament, attended the event. The Romanian ambassador to Berlin explained during press conference that Germany was a supporter of Romania as far as the accession to the EU was concerned. He described it as "a fortunate and symbolical coincidence" that Romania's entry to the EU and Sibiu's status as European Capital of Culture would emerge at times when Germany had presidency over the EU. Berlin is the first capital city of an EU state to host such promotion. It is no random choice, the mayor of Sibiu, Klaus Johannis, confirms. European cities like Paris, Brussels and Vienna are to host similar events. (...) (M.A.)
